| U.S. Junior Olympic Champions Crowned |
Wednesday - June 27, 2001 Current adult U.S. national champion Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) set a new record today as he became the first junior athlete in racquetball history to capture a title in each age division, twice. Co-female Junior Athletes of the Year Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Adrienne Fisher (Dayton, Ohio) each earned titles in their respective age divisions. Huczek, 18, the youngest player ever to win a U.S. National Singles Open division title, breezed through the competition in the boy's 18-and-under division without dropping a game. He was challenged in the finals by Zack Miller (Alta Loma, Calif.) who played tough in the first game and held a 9-8 advantage before Huczek took control in scoring seven unanswered points to take game one 15-9. Huczek then dominated the second game and was able to close out the match with a 15-2 victory. Top seeded Walsh ended unseeded Lauren Deutsch's (West Hills, Calif.) amazing run through several top seeds during the tournament. Deutsch was able to knock off No. 3 seed Crystal Winfrey (Powell, Ohio) and No. 2 seed Krystal Czuk (Naperville, Ill.) in earlier rounds before she fell to Walsh 15-7, 15-2. "This was still really great, "said Deutsch. "I have never made the finals of anything before so I was happy with the way that I played." For Walsh, the current U.S. Intercollegiate Champion the victory
was special. "This is my last Junior National so it was important to me to
win, " said Walsh. "This is very special to be able to go out on top." |
