Huczek, Walsh Win Top Titles at Junior Olympic Championships

The Head 27th U.S. Junior Olympic Championships drew to a close today with Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) capturing the top titles in the 18-and-under division. Huczek grabbed two singles gold medals at this year's championships, not only in the 18-and-under division, but also in the 16-and-under. Walsh leaves this year's event with three gold medals around her neck, winning in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Huczek topped Stephen Lewis (Kennewick, Wash.) in his 18-and-under gold-medal match, 15-3, 15-12, and knocked off Bart Crawford (Klamath Falls, Ore.) in the 16-and-under finals, 15-12, 15-3. Walsh earned her first gold medal of the day with Lewis in mixed doubles by defeating Janel Tisinger (Semi, Calif.) and Brent Walters (Greenville, N.C.), 15-2, 15-12. She then picked up the girls' doubles gold medal with Krystal Csuk (Naperville, Ill.), before facing off against Csuk on the court in the singles gold-medal match.

Csuk managed to take the first game from Walsh, winning it 15-4, but Walsh quickly got her head back into the game and won the second game, 15-7 to force a tiebreaker. She blew away her opponent, 11-1, en route to the gold in the tiebreaker.

Crystal Winfrey (Powell, Ohio) picked up the girls' 16-and-under singles title today over Tisinger in the two girls' second meeting of the day. Winfrey and Tisinger first faced off against each other in the 18-and-under bronze-medal match, which Winfrey won 15-6, 15-11. However, Tisinger gave her opponent a run for the gold in their second meeting, pushing her opponent to a 15-13, 14-15, 11-8 tiebreaker.

Adrienne Fisher (Dayton, Ohio) won her second-straight 14-and-under singles title by defeating Jesi Fuller (Albuquerque, N.M.), 15-8, 15-4. Fisher also won the 16-and-under singles bronze medal by topping her younger sister, Kelley, 15-8, 15-5 in the bronze-medal playoff. The boys' 14-and-under title went to Dan Sheppick (Milwaukie, Ore.) who knocked out Joey Lakowske (Corvallis, Ore.) in the finals, 15-14, 15-7.

For the ninth-straight year, Oregon was awarded the first-place State Trophy for its athletes' outstanding performances at the championships. California finished second, while Ohio took the third place award.
