SOUTHERN COLORADO HOWLING "REPEAT" AT UPCOMING U.S. INTERCOLLEGIATE RACQUETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS |
Boasting one of the strongest men's teams in intercollegiate history, the University of Southern Colorado Thunderwolves appear to have what it takes to capture their second overall team title at the E-Force 27th U.S. National Intercollegiate Racquetball Championships. This year's event, to be held on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas, is scheduled from April 7-11, 1999 and is presented by Penn Racquet Sports. MULTI-NATIONAL WOLVES: The Southern Colorado men's team is led by junior Luis Bustillos at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Willie Tilton (No. 3 singles). Bustillos, a member of the Mexican National Team, is supported by fellow countryman Samuel Menache (No. 4 singles/No. 3 doubles) and Canadian freshman Kris Odegard, who will compete at the No. 5 singles position and the No. 2 doubles spot with Erin Brannigan (No. 2 singles). Another Mexican National Team member, freshman Susy Acosta of Chihuahua, Mexico, will team with graduate student Jo Shattuck to lead the women's squad at Southern Colorado. Shattuck will vie for the No. 1 singles crown, while Acosta will do battle in the No. 2 singles bracket. POSSIBLE TRIP TO PAN AM'S: The winners of the division I men's and women's No.1 singles titles at this year's E-Force 27th U.S. National Intercollegiate Racquetball Championships will earn a one-year spot on the U.S. National Team and a chance to participate in this summer's XIIIth Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. Only U.S. players are eligible for the one-year appointment. MEN'S SINGLES: Bustillos' top challengers for the top spot will be Ohio State's David Hamilton, Texas' Mark Bloom and Javier Moreno of Memphis. Moreno, a transfer from Southern Colorado, is also a member of the Mexican National Team. Additionally, Moreno and Bustillos teamed to take the silver medal for Mexico at the 1998 World Championships in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The talented tandem also won the No. 1 doubles title at the 1997 U.S. National Intercollegiates. Look for freshman Josh Tucker (Missouri Southern State) and Mike Dennison (Baldwin-Wallace) to battle for the division II No. 1 singles crown. WOMEN'S SINGLES: Current world champion and defending U.S. National Intercollegiates champ Christie Van Hees of Canada's Simon Fraser University headlines the women's draw. With teammate and fellow Canadian National Team member Lisa Kerr in the lineup, Simon Fraser has to be looked upon as a favorite to win the women's team title. Kerr and Van Hees are also favored to win the No. 1 doubles crown, as well. Van Hee's main challengers should include Columbia University's Shannon Feaster, Kori Grasha of Canisius, Southern Colorado's Jo Shattuck and Sadie Gross of Memphis. Favorites for the No. 2 singles crown are Simon Fraser's Kerr and Susy Acosta of Southern Colorado. |
